About my picks...
The wines listed at the bottom of the home page are always based on what I believe to be the best wines at their price point. These are wines that we stock and are generally reorderable if out of stock.
Of course, taste is subjective, so I'll give you a rundown of what I like and don't like in a wine. The first is aroma: Does the wine smell like the grape type (varietal)? If it doesn't, it is either too ripe, not ripe enough or too oaky. Second, I look for balance: Is the ripe fruit balanced by firm acidity and tannin (in reds)? There should be a harmonious mouth-feel. Third, I smell and taste for alcohol. Does the wine smell and taste "hot" from the alcohol? If so, this is a flaw, and it usually means that the fruit is overripe or that the sugar levels were too high before the fruit was fully mature. And lastly: Is the wine clean from oak? My favorite wines usually are stainless steel fermented and matured, fermented and matured in 2 to 3 year old barrels, or have seen 30% or less new oak. I would rather taste the pure fruit rather than that masked by vanilla (due to new oak)!
